Humankind has always been fascinated with the heavens, with the planets and stars we see in the night sky. In this article we are discussing what is known as Western astrology as opposed to Eastern [or Indian] and Chinese astrology.

We can trace the history of astrology right back to the ancient Babylonians in around 1600 BC and from there it was eventually passed to the ancient Greeks in about the 4th century BC. The art or science of astrology can certainly boast a long pedigree. But in its early forms, astronomy and astrology were closely linked, even considered one and the same thing. But as scientific knowledge expanded, the two forms separated and today of course, astrology and astronomy are poles, or is that galaxies apart?

One early explanation of astrology is that it was the heavens or divine governing of the world. The gods above were responsible for the weather which in turn gave life to their human subjects. Gods lived on planets such as Jupiter and Mars. In the beginning the priests in Babylon were responsible for interpreting the actions of the gods and thus were the first astrologers.

Astrology for today

Today astrology tracks the path of the sun and how the planets, including the Earth, move in relation to the passage of the sun.  The zodiac is an imaginary shape in the heavens in the middle of which is the path of the sun. There are 12 constellations within the zodiac and each has its own star or sign. Most people refer to them as star signs but others call them sun signs. It is these signs such as Libra, Capricorn and Pisces which are given to people.

Modern astrologers give readings on all aspects of life basing their readings on the position of the planets. Astrologers today issue horoscopes which are comments and predictions on aspects of a person’s life. The astrologer could make a prediction on the prospects of a person’s love-life, their finance or health, etc.

The astrologer creates the horoscope using the person’s date of birth – the actual time of delivery is important for really accurate readings – and by studying the position of the sun, moon and planets at that precise time.

As with many things, there are serious astrologers and those who take it less seriously. Some publications will have a horoscope which deals light-heartedly with a person’s predictions. One even had an astrologer named Katcha Star. But a serious astrologer will have taken years to study the heavens and once given your birth details can produce a detailed and personal astrological prediction.

Zodiac signs

Here we have a combination of astrology and astronomy because the zodiac is that area of the heavens created by the path of the sun in its travels over a 12 month period. Within this area are constellations and each one forms a shape such as a bull, a ram or a fish. These constellations are the signs of the zodiac. There are 12 and every person, because of their date of birth, is given a sun sign or sign of the zodiac.

The names of the zodiac signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Daily horoscope

Astrologists make predictions which can appear on web sites or in newspapers. To some such horoscopes are interesting even highly relevant. To others they are nonsense and of no interest. But this has been the case for thousands of years.

Many rulers took advice from their astrologers before going to battle. Many people today insist on reading their daily horoscope before undertaking their usual routine. Controversy has always surrounded astrology yet the topic continues to flourish.

Astrological predictions

These can vary from a prediction on the weather for an important event, to the condition of a nation’s economy to the success of a forthcoming marriage.  For the serious astrologer, the same method applies at all times. What is the birth date of the person or country or event? What will be the alignment of the sun, moon and planets at the relevant times? How will these positions impact the forthcoming event?

The fact that there are thousands of web pages offering astrological predictions indicates the level of interest in the subject. Remember predictions can be made for any event or occasion. There are no limits to the study and application of horoscopes.
